I thought hyundai means "modern", or xian dai (current generation) in Mandarin. So it should be very common name in Korea. It is like Honda and Toyota are common family names.

yes, you're right. hyundai means modern or xian dai in mandarin. it's not a common name in korea though. i've never met a hyundai-named person. it's usually lee, kim, song, seo, kang, um, etc. for last names.

Hyundai is not a name in Korea. There are three major department stores in Korea and Hyundai is one of them. The other two are Lotte and Shinsegae Baekhwajum (department store). I don't know if Hyundai is actually linked to the cars company, but I know for sure that it's a large retail company in Korea. Hope that helps. :)
