Super Tuna Roll and Shrimp Tenpura Roll

8 lickslick itunlick $7.99
These rolls are made by a friendly guy and girl that opened up a corner in a local Super Stop & Shop supermarket. The fish has always been tasty and one time it was even still a little frozen when I started to eat it, but within seconds became thawed out. Which impressed me. The price is reasonable for the area I live in (Western Massachusetts) at $7.49 - $7.99 each.

The rolls are each eight pieces and come with wasabi, ginger and soy sauce.
The shrimp Tenpura consists of avocado. large shrimp tenpura, and cucumber on the inside. Then it is rolled in tobiko. Finally the maker lightly drizzles some sauce on top.

The super tuna roll is similar. Inside is tuna, avocado and cucumber. The roll is then formed and rolled in tobiko. What makes it super is the tobiko.

What makes this stand out from the local restaurants, is that there are eight pieces (sometimes more), and that the rolls diameter is about 1.25 greater than local places. The rice varies sometimes in stickiness, but the maker has cut the variation amount down since he first started. I think the rice is sweeter than the restaurants use too. Also he may put in an extra whole shrimp tenpura piece for you.

I am impressed with the value. The taste, quality, price and freshness keep me going back. There are two grocery stores locally and both tried to have sushi in them. This is the one supermarket that still makes sushi daily, and I can see why.

Here is a close up of the two rolls. The Super tuna on the left (notice the square!) and the tenpura on the right (Notice the lightly drizzled sauce!).

Super Tuna Evaluation: The tobiko is crunchy on the outside and the inside is crisp and creamy. The avocado adds to the creamy texture, while the cucumber is soft and crispy. The tuna does not melt in your mouth (see kevin's recent Tokyo sushi restaurant reviews for some excellent tuna!) but it is not chewy. No fish taste at all, except for a light sweet flavor.

Shrimp Tenpura review - Well the chef added a whole extra shrimp tenpura on the side as a bonus. I was very happy with that. I like how large shrimp are used, because I could really taste the shrimp and the texture of the shrimp. Sweet taste and very fresh. The batter can become a little soggy sometimes, which makes it slip out of the end pieces on the roll. I like how the cucumber and avocado are in this and the tobiko is a great touch.

Both were very fresh and for lunch, one roll is enough for most people. Two rolls can be enough for lunch and dinner as long as they are properly kept cool.

I enjoyed them and for the three day weekend I splurged an bought two!
: D

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Yes it is! Thanks for noticing, because they do give out a good amount, it's like "hearty" sushi! It makes me very full. And when it is so fresh like that, the taste is so sweet! Freshest I have ever had when it was just a hint still frozen.

A few times over the past two years they actually had a few
fatty pieces. The tuna was fattier I mean. It had some marbling to it. I think every once and while they add a different grade of tuna. Which is a real treat! It's a little bit of mystery with the different grades appearing and the extra bonus things they include. It makes it fun to buy from them. Not to mention they are always very friendly.
