From my oldest uncle's sister-in-law's tree. Soooo firm and sweet. I had forgotten how good these can be since the fresh lychees at the market are all imported so they had to be picked before they're ripe.

I was told that the lychee tree cannot survive the cold in Northern California. Is this tree in S. California?
My mom said lychee is very "yang" type fruit. You may get a nose bleed if you eat too much. Since you have access to a tree-ful of lychees, have you noticed any side effects from eating this fruit?
Longans come out in the same season and they are really good too.

Yup, I'm in SoCal. But that little bunch was all I got. I shared half with my sister so I don't think there's any danger of getting a nose bleed (Although I am susceptible to them.). I've heard the same thing about mangoes too.
I do have a longan tree in my yard but it's not ripe yet. The pomegranates are starting to sweeten though!

Look at the white meat on that one lychee. It looks like it's bulging out of its skin.

Are these from California? You can grow them in Cali? If so, why do we import them?

Yup, they're from my oldest uncle's sister-in-law's tree. I only got a small bunch since my uncle then doled out what he got amongst his family. As to why they're not grown commercially here, you'd have to ask a farmer for that. They're tons better than the imported ones, which have little color or taste in comparison.
