King crab

We had connection with a seafood supplier. We were solicited whenever he was willing to off-load his inventory at wholesale price. I don't remember the price of this crab, but it was cheaper than the supermarket's price.

Ignore that crab man behind the bath robe.

This was much easier than the big lobster because the shell was kinda soft. A cleaver chopped it up easily. But I had to watch out for those spines.

How did you cook it?

Chopped it up at all the joints. Steamed it unseasoned. It was then served with some soy sauce seasoned with scallion and garlic.

Actually no seasoning is needed for any kind of live crab if you want to taste the natural sweetness of fresh crab meat. Crab, being a marine animal, is slightly salty even unseasoned. You can add some scallion and ginger if you must season it. However, you may want to smother a dead crab with spices because live crabs and dead crabs just taste different both in flavor and texture.

The inside lining of the body shell was very yummy too, great flavor with the texture of egg yoke.
We didn't consume all the lining because of cholesterol concern.

You may ruin your appetite if you think of it as a spider.

I also wondered if this animal was genetically related to spiders. I found another pair of legs hidden inside the lower rear part of the body. The extra pair of legs are de-evolved when they are not used, just like the human tail bone. Unlike 6 legged insects, spiders have 8 legs, so does this crab. It is very possible that they evolved from the same ancestor millions of years ago.

Actually these are not related to spiders (except maybe distantly). The king crabs are actually related to hermit crabs. The reduced 5th pair of legs is used by hermits to hold onto the borrowed snail shell, used by king crabs to clean abdomen and back of shell.

Which kind of enemy?
1. The kind that you stay away from.
2. The kind that you would hunt down each individual, cook and eat.

What you suggested remind me of a story that I read when I was a kid. There was a bloodthirty wolf which bothered a village for sometime, attacking their livestock etc. The people were kind of scare of it and worried it may harm the children some day. A wiseman thought of a way to take care of it. In one very cold winter day, he planted a very sharp knife in the ground. Put some animal blood on it and hang a piece of meat over the sharp blade. The wolf came, ate the meat and licked the bloody blade. Since it was a very cold day, it didn't feel the pain. It just kept on licking as long as their was blood on the blade. It died due to massive blood loss.

Mmm... Let prepare this crab with some ma-la sauce. The ma-la will numb the mouth and tongue, hence no feeling of pain and Hugh will lick until no more blood to drop. :-)
