Tarocco Blood Orange

Tarocco Blood Orange is a sweet, juicy, medium to large blood orange variety with few to no seeds. The Tarocco blood orange is one of three of the major blood orange varieties of the world, being mostly consumed in Europe, Australia, and the Middle East. The Moro, another blood orange variety, is more prevalent and commerically available in the United States. The distinctive color is a natural mutation and is due to the presence of anthocyanin, the same plant compound that is responsible for the color of pomegranates. The Tarocco variety is my personal favorite blood orange variety based on taste and quality in comparison to the Moro and the more tart/acidic Sanguinelli varieties.

Hi crazypooh! :) I usually make blood orange juice from the Tarocco blood oranges without the orange rind. The essential oils from the rind drastically shortens the shelf life of the orange juice. To best preserve the nutritional content of the blood oranges, especially the anthocyanin levels, I almost always juice the oranges rindless, and the resulting juice usually has a long shelf life of a single month to a month and a half, and much longer if frozen.

The Tarocco blood orange tree supplies me annually with over 4 months of fruit, beginning in mid-December to late April/early May with weekly harvestings of 20-25 pounds of fruit. If you ever want to try the Tarocco blood oranges, you're always welcome to come and pick from my tree when it's in season! :)
