Current agriculture research project on blueberry varieties. Approximate weekly yield of blueberries is about 25-30 lbs. (just from 5 bushes) from May through late August. The Gem and Sapphire are my favorite varieties.

Are you growing blueberries in pots? Don't they require really acidic soil or something special? I loooove blueberries but haven't really seen them grown here. Lots in the Pacific NW though.

Blueberries do require acidic soil; to achieve the "perfect" soil mixture, simply use equal parts peat moss (naturally acid-based) and wood chips/mulch (for drainage). Usually, a tablespoon of sulfur is sparingly added to create a biological reaction in the acidification of the soil (enables soil to achieve pH of 3.8-4.5) while the plants are potted in one-gallon containers prior to planting. Blueberries thrive in low-chill climates and though blueberries are "new" here, California actually has the ideal climatic environment for the emerging blueberry industry. These blueberries are grown in Riverside of all places! Transplant the blueberry bushes in the soil and fertilize them only once a year in the springtime, or else they will not bear fruit if they remain potted.

P.S. wanderingchopsticks, I'm going to start propagating blueberries next month, so if you're interested in growing bluberries, I can give you a plant or two. :)

Oooh! Yes please! :) They're my very favorite berry. I love blackberries too but those grow too big and thorny.
