I think it's good basic Chinese food. Nothing too fancy. I wasn't "wowed" by any one item. But I didn't hate anything either. The portions are generous. And except for the banquet price, and it's b/c you're paying for the private room, the normal prices aren't bad. But then, I could say this about lots of Chinese restaurants in SGV. :)

Would you recommend this place for a small banquet? I am planning on a party for my dad's 75th birthday in February with about 20-25 people. I am looking for a Cantonese place with an actual room, as opposed to a condoned off area. Of course the food has to be good. I've heard mixed results about the "usual" places (261 Mission, NBC, Ocean Star, etc.) from Chowhound and eGullet.

If you're looking for a small room, I think this place might suit you. We had 4 tables in this room but the room itself could be sectioned off with a sliding wall, so for 2-3 tables, you'd have privacy.

I was just at NBC a few weeks ago for dim sum and the quality had gone way down. Don't know how it is for dinner. I like Mission 261 myself and they do have private rooms that are a lot nicer looking. I've never been too impressed with Ocean Star.

Another restaurant with private rooms is Empress Harbor. Here's my post about a wedding banquet there but you can get an idea of the food. http://wanderingchopsti ... eafood-restaurant.html

I would highly recommend going out to eat at the restaurant to check out the food quality and what the rooms look like first. Sometimes there's off nights, and sometimes chefs change, so I can only tell you what it's like on the day I went. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I will check them out when I come home for Xmas! I've been to Hop Woo and NBC before, but it's been awhile...
