Spicy Beef noodle soup

This might be pricy but it's the best spicy beef noodle soup in LA according to me, and trust me, I've tried many many places. This beats the others in every way. The soup is thick with beef flavor, with a hint of Chinese herbs, ginger, chili, and pickled vegetable. The beef is chucky but not chewy, in fact, it's very tendor. Unfortunately, non-spicy is not an option. Also there's no pickled vegetable on the side. Hey, it's the noodle nazi I'm talking about here, so deal with it.

Guess what! The Chinese name of these two restaurant is the same! Both of them spell out "Da Huh Roo Way". They just have different English name!

Actually the Chinese name is somewhat different because they're the same pronunciaton but diff characters. Anyways I heard that they were related years ago but then again I could be drunk. The important thing is that they do not taste the same at all. I haven't been to Ding's Garden but I shall return with mo' pix.

Yes. their sig dish is the beef noodles but it's NOT for everyone who can't enjoy spice. My friends and I have tried to reverse engineer the spices and the most mysterious ingredident is this black substance we conclude is either ground up "ma lah" 麻辣. Either that or gunpowder, take your pick.

That being said, their other noodles are just as tasty including the Chicken soup (a great contrast to the Beef) as well as their cold dishes: spicy tofu and picked veggie.

If only someone can consult these Chinese restaurants in terms of names. First we have "Yung Ho" on Valley and now there's "Dai Ho."
Are they all being named by some Chinese pimp?

The ma lah sensation comes from the SzeChuen pepper corns (a.k.a. Hua Jiao 花椒 or 川椒).

I am not a food expert, but I heard that chili pepper is a new world plant. i.e. Before Columbus discovered the new world, Chinese people cooked with more of the ma (numbing) sensation than the la (burning spicy).

Wow, this looks good, too. Got it on my list of to-tries. When you guys say that it might be ma lan, does that mean that this one makes your mouth numb? Not sure I'm so into that. :-\

Wow, I'm surprised everyone's commenting on this dish that I posted 2 months ago. I've noticed that it is not as spicy anymore, but the flavor of the broth is just as intense. Henry, this restaurant only serves lunch so make sure you get there before 3 pm. Try the side dishes too.

meowmi,

To answer your question about "ma lan," this dish does not contain the chili that makes your mouth numb. In fact, as allmosdef alluded to, it's not really spicy anymore.
