No, I think the difference is not like Papaya. I found the following quote from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durian
[start quote]
Travel and food writer Richard Sterling says:
“ ... its odor is best described as pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away. Despite its great local popularity, the raw fruit is forbidden from some establishments such as hotels, subways and airports, including public transportation in Southeast Asia. ”
Other comparisons have been made with the civet, sewage, stale vomit, skunk spray, and used surgical swabs.
[end quote]
Pig shit, sewage, gym sock never came to mind when I ate durian. Such strong smells to some people are not picked up by some other noses. I actually found durian sweetly fragrant. Pig shit and gym sock stinks universally to everyone, but durian only stinks to some people. Some kind of genetic differences or brain functions may play a trick on how different people perceive the same smell so differently. Perhaps some grad students can pick this up as a PhD thesis to understand the brain better.
