it's actually pretty good. I just tried some the other day.

Like a really sweet avocado custard punctuated with hints of garlic and some fish sauce

Whoa! You taste garlic and fish sauce in durian? I definitely do not taste that. It's like eating butter to me.

I heard that part of the population find its smell offensive, some describe it as bad as cat poop, while the rest do not sense that smell at all. I am in the lucky group which cannot detect the smell. To me, darian has a very faint fragrant smell. I tried it before and found it very tasty too. However I refrain myself from eating it or else my wife and kids would kick me out of the house, brushing and mouthwash won't change their minds. I was also told that once you fall in love with this fruit, you'll always crave for it. For the unity of the family, I must resist its temptation and avoid addiction.

Lol. Is it like papaya? Some people don't like the smell of papaya. I do, however.

No, I think the difference is not like Papaya. I found the following quote from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durian

[start quote]

Travel and food writer Richard Sterling says:

“ ... its odor is best described as pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away. Despite its great local popularity, the raw fruit is forbidden from some establishments such as hotels, subways and airports, including public transportation in Southeast Asia. ”
Other comparisons have been made with the civet, sewage, stale vomit, skunk spray, and used surgical swabs.
[end quote]

Pig shit, sewage, gym sock never came to mind when I ate durian. Such strong smells to some people are not picked up by some other noses. I actually found durian sweetly fragrant. Pig shit and gym sock stinks universally to everyone, but durian only stinks to some people. Some kind of genetic differences or brain functions may play a trick on how different people perceive the same smell so differently. Perhaps some grad students can pick this up as a PhD thesis to understand the brain better.
