Mangosteen

These are impossible to grow and were banned from importation into the U.S. until this year. They're frozen but once melted still turned out really good.

There's about a dozen mangosteens in the bag, but some of them are really small.

They look like lychees. Do they taste alike?

Not at all. It's hard to describe b/c they don't taste like anything else. This is the latest drink craze - Xango, with mangosteen. The skins are supposed to help aid digestion. So in Vietnam, my relatives dry it out and boil it into a tea if they have a stomachache.

Haha! I'm imagining this huge BM mob at the store. Just make sure when you're buying them to look through all the fruit and avoid the ones with yellow pus. That's kinda typical for this fruit though, that's what makes them so hard to import. It's still edible but you don't wanna have to pick out the yellow stuff.

I was looking forward to eating fresh fruit like this during my trip to Vietnam, but unfortunately it was canceled.

definitely my favorite tropical fruit. Even when you're in VN it's only seasonal. I ate so many of these and dragon fruits when I was in HK.

In Chinese, this is called Shan Juk (山竹 or 山竺). I think it originates from Thailand. When I traveled to Thailand before, the tour guide said, Durian (榴槤) is the king of fruits and this Mangosteen is the queen. Regretably, I didn't try it while I was in Thailand.
