so headcheese is not cheese?
Your response:
By wanderingchopsticks 1 year ago
Nope. It's a terrine meat cold cut using various head parts like ears and snout, pressed together, then sliced. Sometimes it includes feet or heart too. Basically just a way to use up leftover bits of meat.

VNese headcheese if often made with pig ears for crunch and sliced thicker. American headcheese doesn't have ears and is deli-thin. I like both. :)

fascinating. thx. i was at lee's today and was wondering why the asian sandwiches are so much cheaper than the "european" ones. headcheese is an unfortunate name.

The European ones have deli meat and more of it so it's more expensive. Lettuce costs more than a few sprigs of cilantro. I think it comes with a pickle too? It's been a while since I've eaten one but yeah, the price reflects the increased price of the ingredients.

yes it comes with a pickle. i guess i just didn't want to think the asian ingredients could be that much cheaper, but i guess so. the ham and cheese sandwich was delicious! i forgot to take a picture till i had eaten almost all of it.

Well, if the European sandwiches had only 1 slice of each meat, it'd be cheaper. :P But I don't think you want that. And cheese costs money too. Whereas, the Vietnamese sandwiches, they make their own meats in-house so that greatly reduces costs.

They also make cha lua (steamed pork loaf), the barbecued meats, and the pork floss used in the sandwiches.
Your response:

It's like dehydrated pork that's been shredded. I'm not a fan. But during one of my mom's trips down here, her friend asked her to by $100 worth of Lee's Sandwiches pork floss. I think it only lasted a few weeks b/c my mom's friend's kids love the stuff.

It doesn't say it's VNese on the wiki info, but it is too eaten in VN! :)

i didn't know this was called pork floss. i love this stuff. my roommate (chinese) gets it, but i don't think it's called pork floss. i think of it as meat cotton candy.
