Topped with orange ponzu, radish, scallion, and 24-karat edible gold leaf. The fish had a slightly charred or pan-seared flavor and intense marbling more akin to Kobe beef than fish. The orange ponzu balanced well with the toro's slightly seared flavor. However, some felt the radish overpowered the finish of the scallion. A great way to kick off the evening.

I personally am never sure what to make of the edible metals -- yes they're pretty, but I'm sure their aromatic/taste contributions are minimal (and may even be on the negative side.) I do go ga-ga over the metallic sheen some cuts of meat display though.

Were you doing an omakase @ urasawa? Everything looks and sounds pretty... and expensive!

Indeed, I couldn't discern any notable flavors from the gold. I'm sure it's there just to add to the extravagance and luxuriousness of the dish. Certainly is pretty though!

Yes, this was the omakase at Urasawa, 31 courses of pure brilliance. $250pp but worth every cent. See the full review here: http://blog.myspace.com ... 99639&blogID=193780174

I'm sure we'll be back to Urasawa in due time. But I hope to try Masa first, especially when fugu's in season.
