No, that isn't a typo and yes, it's actually a very good price (you won't find this for less than $7000 on the open market). The wine was purchased for investment rather than imbibement, as it is far too precious to merely drink at this point in my life. I imagine that sometime next year, the bottle will find its way to the auction block in New York City. I definitely didn't expect to walk out of Napa Rose with this!

99 points, Robert Parker: "The medium to dark ruby-colored 1999 Romanee-Conti is mind-boggling. It has a hugely expressive nose of super-ripe black cherries, candied plums, and violets. Full-bodied and possessing a magnificent breadth of sweet, penetrating fruits, this is an unbelievably complex wine. It coats the palate with its velvety sweet cherries, jammy blackberries, and fruit-soaked tannin. Perfectly balanced and seamless, this gem has a remarkably long finish. This is a wine of exemplary precision, delineation, and power with undescribable class and refinement."

Truly Amazing and Very Admirable! It's a nice return on investment...Hopefully you can drink it with the person who buys it. From what geographic region does this wine originate?

Kevin,

What happens if it goes bad? Or the cork gets tainted? Or something? Can you return it and say it sucked? Oh man, I so could not appreciate wine that expensive!

I think it's pretty much buyer beware. Caveat emptor. I won't be drinking this one anyway though. ;)

Not drink it? Ack! You know, that bottle of wine costs more than a "round-the-world" ticket! I'd rather go around the world! :)

Lol. It's an investment to me. In fact, I had 29 similar bottles sold at auction Thursday night in NYC. ;)

Would dabbling in stocks be a whole lot easier? :P

Did you read that article in the LA Times a while back on some Indonesian rich boy who shares super expensive wine with his friends? That he's one of the few people who know the differences between various 19th century wines b/c well, frankly, he's one of the few people who can actually afford to buy so many bottles of such expensive wine?

In my experience, wine actually has less risk and a higher return than the stock market in general.

I haven't heard about the Indonesian guy though.

I'd be worried about storage I guess? I tried googling that story but couldn't find it again. Too bad b/c I think you would have really appreciated reading it. He didn't seem pretentious about it, just a really wealthy guy who enjoys and can afford expensive wine and readily shares it with his friends. I sort of vaguely remember that the whole point was he was taking that knowledge and opening a wine bar but obviously I don't remember any details of that either!

Yep storage is certainly a risk. Currently I rent out a professional temperature and humidity controlled facility. I don't have any insurance, so if there's a fire or earthquake...

OK, so I put my Googling skills to work again and did find that article after all. Someone saved it on their blog.
