There's actually a really good hainan chicken rice where in the corner of the mall On Valley and New where Vons used to be. I believe it's now 168 market? ANywy it's tucked right into the corner there.

I am sure the quality of the rice and the chicken is better at home but man both Savoy and Dong Nguyen the sauce is the kicker

Is Dong Nguyen VNese-Hainanese? In which case, they're probably from my village. :P

Most versions of Hainanese chicken rice that's sold around here is Chinese-Singaporean style, in which the emphasis is on the chicken and they dunk that in ice water so I think it washes out the taste. VNese restaurants, they pour broth into cooked rice. I've never found any in restaurants that are better than what I get at home.

Yeah it is, they use the chicken stock and sauté the rice

Do they saute the rice before it's cooked or after? If the rice is washed, drained, sauted, then cooked in chicken broth, then it's done VNese-Hainanese style.

If they saute cooked rice in chicken broth, then it's VNese shortcut style and is not the same flavor at all.

It's like the difference between making risotto the real way by slowly adding in the broth, or just pouring the broth onto cooked rice. Cooked rice won't absorb as much broth, so less flavor.
