    jtolam's details

    About me:
I LOVE DOGS! I love eating out, cooking, and spending time with my dogs.
Most of the time dogs are much better than people, they're loyal, great companion and most importantly they're not petty like people.
    Food I like to eat:
Love almost everything that's good. The most important thing is fresh ingredients. I love sushi, starting with nigiri, sashimi and then rolls. Other favorites are Greek, Mediterranean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Mexican, Thai and Chinese. My boyfriend and I love to find new places to eat. We like ethnic foods.
Pretty much the only fast food we like to eat is In N Out Burger-cheese burger and animal fries.
I love desserts-flan, tiramisu, cake, ice cream, anything good....
Food I do not like to eat:
Unhealthy food, bland foods that you find in American fast food joints.
I don't like most slopping looking food. Unappetizing looking foods have a lot to make up for.
Burrito- can you hold the bean, the brown rice and the corn wrapper?
I like Mexican food but no corn, beans, or brown rice please.
Who I'd like to eat with:
    My boyfriend, family and friends.
    My exercise routine:
walking and hiking with my boyfriend and dogs

We probably won't go to the Maui Ocean Center. We already booked for the Old Lahaina Luau. I'm convinced that it's one of those "do not miss" experience (Plus, we checked out their website and the menu sounds scrumptious!)
It's crazy how much planning is needed. Also, my boyfriend told me that if you were native you get the resident price for food, which is much less than what the tourists pay for, is that true?

    By Robyn 3 years ago
The reason I said the Maui Ocean center was just alright was because I've been to a lot better aquariums here on the mainland....although I haven't been to the one on Maui for a while. I've been twice, once when it first opened then a few years later.

Maui is warm, but if you go up to Haleakala, you have to be there by 4am...and way up on the mountain is super duper cold!! If you go bring your jackets...and your camera! :)
    By jtolam 3 years ago
It's so weird that you suggested "Old Lahaina Luau" because I just read about it in a travel magazine today...what a coincident. It must be really good. I'm sure we will try to go to as many restaurant you suggest. Hopefully, we won't get lost. My boyfriend has been to Hawaii a few times. I think he's only been to Maui once though. I would love to see the sunrise. Why is it cold there? I thought it's suppose to be warm?
So you think the Ocean Center is just "alright"? There's no wow factor there?
If it's only alright then I would rather do some outdoor activity instead of wasting half a day or so in there. :)
Anyway, you gave us a lot of ideas, I really appreciate it. :)
    By jtolam 3 years ago
That sounds great Robyn. We will do that.
Thank you for your suggestion. I'm sure we will love it.
    By Robyn 3 years ago
one more thing - buy the "Maui Revealed" book...you can probably find it at Barnes and Noble. It is the best book for "local secrets"...I told a few people who were visiting Maui to get it and they all loved the suggestions in the book.
    By Robyn 3 years ago
Sorry, I don't know if there are any great Chilean Sea Bass dishes...I'm sure there are, but I don't have any suggesions. But DEFINATELY go to Mama's Fish House - it's in the upcountry area, about 1 hr from Lahaina. In Lahaina, try Mala's Ocean Tavern (I posted pics from there), it's really good food! If you want to try a Luau, "Old Lahaina Luau" is supposed to be the best. Pacific'O Restaurant is in Lahaina as well, they have good seafood too. Sansei (two locations - lahaina & kihei) have really good sushi. Hula Grill is on Kaanapali Beach (my favorite beach on maui) and you can sit in their "bar" area, which is right on the sand. As for activities, Maui Ocean Center is alright...there's a show called Ulalena in Lahaina as well. If you like Cirque shows, you might like this one. And try and make it up to Haleakala for sunrise, it's very cold and you have to wake up really early, but its worth it! Hope you have fun!! :)

oh yea, are the French food pretty authentic? I love French food.
    By Robyn 3 years ago
Yes, I was born and grew up on Maui. I have lots of suggestions!! :) Depending on what you're looking for. Some good (expensive) seafood places are Mama's Fish House (this is one of my faves); Waterfront; Buzz's Wharf. French food - Gerrards; David Pauls. Chicago-Style pizza - BJ's on Front Street in Lahaina!!! For local food, I would suggest Cupies in Kahului or Da Kitchen in Kihei. Definately try Guri Guri (Ice cream-like treat). Tiffany's in Wailuku is great as well. Let me know if there is anything in particular you like, and I can try of come up with some suggestions :)

not surprisingly this was NOT the first time those ppl accused a contest winner of cheating. Anyhow, karma is only a bitch slap away for those ppl.
    By chanwolf 3 years ago
I think it is more than a little ridiculous that someone would attack a young woman over a $20 food popularity contest. Calling her a cheater makes absolutely no sense.

First, there are NO contest rules ANYWHERE that prohibit new users from voting. So, having new users lick your food is fair; otherwise, there would have been rules against it. Second, the website could have easily been coded to make it impossible for new users to lick anyone until they have been on the website for 24 hours or even more than that if the founders actually wanted to prevent new users from licking food.

So, the only conclusion to be made is that new users licking food is fair, or the founders would have created rules and/or programming to prevent it.

More importantly, it shows zero class for any real man to attack a woman over a $20 food popularity contest. What is this? The high school prom where some guy badmouths the prom queen just because he wasn't voted the prom king? Puh-leeeze. Most men with any sense of class or chivalry would just congratulate the young woman for her victory and then wish her luck in the future as well.

Instead, the petty guy whispers slander about her supposedly cheating to whoever will listen to him, and then he is cowardly enough to hide behind the words of one of the founders by quoting the founder's words out of context!

Not only should he apologize to the young woman involved for rudely accusing her of cheating, he should apologize to the site founder for cowardly misusing the founder's words for some stupid petty quarrel that he had with someone who beat him fair and square in a $20 food popularity contest.

That would be the only classy thing to do.
    By jtolam 3 years ago
    Henry,

I absolutely understood your position and gave you the benefit of the doubt that you were either quoted out of context and/or being diplomatic. However, I was disappointed that you didn't address it head on that you were misquoted the first time around. And because you didn't publicly address your misquote in a timely manner, it could be construed as though you were condoning one user to use what you said against another's character.
Both Karina and I were worried that you were tacitly approving that slander since you didn't seem to respond to our concerns. But now I'm glad that you're sorry to have someone use your words against me. And I trust that you will let the other user know that he shouldn't ever try to use your words to try to slander another person in a vicious way again.
After all, I am SURE that you hated being quoted out of context like that just to be used as some pawn in someone else's petty slander scheme.
    By jtolam 3 years ago
    Henry,
I appreciate your nonresponse. I understand that you're trying to be as neutral and unbiased as possible. Although I understand your PR role and all, but this still doesn't explain the fact that you agreed with him that I compromised the integrity of the competition. What do you think that little post of his about your response make out to be as far as my integrity? I understand that you could have been trying to be as agreeable as possible due to your position and all, but they made that little chat between you two public and insinuated that you agreed that I compromised the integrity of the competition. So your response is extremely inconclusive as to whether or not you have a problem with my winning the contest.

And to address your little chat about new users- Just because I have new friends to vote doesn't mean that their votes is any less legit than his friends. I'm sorry to say that but it makes no sense that you'd call me out on having new people to lick my food because they're my friends while let it go that he had ppl to lick his food because they're his friends.
Also it is ridiculous that my dish alone couldn't win his dish on look and taste (just because he got friends to lick his ugly, unappetizing looking dish-should I call in question the integrity of the existing users? NO, I shouldn't). So yea I got it, it's a popularity contest. And they're pissed that a newcomers can beat them at their own little popularity contest. Just because I have friends who'd bother to set up an account and check out the site to see what's all the fuss is about, doesn't mean that I cheated or that I compromised the integrity of the competition.
It's so ridiculous that we're still talking about it and hear those bitches still squealing after 2 days. Don't they have other things to bitch at?
    By jtolam 3 years ago
    Yea Henry,
Sounds like you have a problem with my win.
    By henrychan 3 years ago
    Congrats on winning the contest!!
    By ktolam 3 years ago
such pettiness. let's be better than those ppl.
    By ktolam 3 years ago
congrats on winning. Some ppl are just SAD!!!
    By jtolam 3 years ago
I'm sorry your friend didn't win. He was really close though, and he did put up a great fight! But honestly I think most ppl would have sushi over OX tail any day. Besides, my friends love eating out with me...so when they heard that ox tail is beating my spicy sushi roll just because he has a lot of friends up here...they had to check it out :P. So yea, thanz for your comment anyhow. I'd lick your food if you posted something that looks tasty and not all black like your friend's ox tail.

wow you won the contest. and you got 4 people to join today and they all ONLY licked your picture so that you'd win...

NO, you sound totally awesome. :) I'd love to do more cleanses, except that I'm still such a chicken and don't want to try something so radical. But I'm all for natural cures, cleanses and stuff. I'm not really doing it for losing weight, since I kinda know where my normal weight is, and it's hard to keep it down since I have such a big appetite. I am doing it for health reason and if it makes me feel all better then that's all that matters. I checked out some of the other cleanses before and wanting to do them but got lazy. So now I'm starting out again with the master cleanse, maybe I will try some other cleanses when I get back. Will ask you later about the details of your cleanses.

I'm going to pig out on healthy food though, lots of wild seafood dishes. I think that we should at least do a colon cleanse every year. It's just one of those things that make sure our system is clean and healthy.
I haven't try other cleanses, but I would like to do more in the future. What are bentonite and psyllium cleanses?
