    JoeL's details

    About me:
I am Cantonese Chinese originally from Hong Kong.
    Food I like to eat:
Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Malaysian & Spicy food. I like all kind of soups. I like fruits and fruity beverages.
Food I do not like to eat:
I liked but cannot eat offals. I knew I used up my lifetime quota when I developed gout.

I hate raw onion and raw garlic, but I love the cooked version of the same thing. What a big difference a little cooking makes!

I don't like American desserts because they are usually 3 times sweeter than they should be. Chinese, Japanese & French bakeries make good light desserts.

I hate artificial sweeteners. I'd rather have my drink unsweetened than to tolerate that aweful after-taste. Recent studies say diet sodas make people fatter than regular sodas, so what is the point to get fatter and cancer at the same time?
Who I'd like to eat with:
    family & friends.
    My exercise routine:
Chewing food. Clicking the TV remote control.

Hi JoeL, re: the upload speed/time, I use this easy software to shrink the images before I upload. It reduces the file size about 90%.

    http://www.rw-designer.com/picture-resize

Download PhotoResize400.exe and place it on your desktop. Rename it to: PhotoResize800.exe

and then drag your file folder with the images over the icon.

    hope this helps.

    thanks for all the support!

Thanks for the photo tips! It ended up being that the default setting for my camera had the image way too big like at 1,000 or something. I sized it down and it seems to be fine now.

Actually I have the same connection. It's been pretty easy to upload from how. Though I am at a hotel this week and it takes twice the amount of time to upload probably due to the fact that I am sharing my connection with many others..

stay tuned for some food pictures from our recent Asian trip. I have some good one in mind, e.g. a HK$2000 cubic water melon from Japan. A basket of JPN 5000 yen grapes. The poisoneous blowfish dinner we had in Japan etc.

We didn't have a habit to take pictures of food except when we encountered something new and special during travel. As a tourist, the camera is always around. At home, it is kind of awkward to take pictures of food.

hehehe... you're almost #1 with the number of licks. That's awesome! I have 4713 and it took me one year.

What did you think of your whole "licking" experience? fun? useless? etc? should it be something different? So far, a "lick" doesn't do anything for the user, but we'd like to use the "lick" for something in the future. perhaps, showing other similar dishes, etc, etc.

Thanks for the support. And, thanks for all the suggestions on the forum! We very much appreciate the feedback.

The gray greenish topping look like molds.

I like this restaurant too. This is their specialty dish. Kuro means black in Japanese. It looks like the aftermath of the oil spill in Alaska with black oil floating on top of the bowl. When you stir it, you see the milky color broth underneath. Despite the look, it tastes good.

Our kids love this dish, we always ask the waiter to give us an extra order of the bread. I believe our kids love the bread more than the ham.

This is the kind of dried and chewy ham similar to Virginia ham. In Chinese, this is known as kum wah foor tui, the same kind that they put in some mooncakes for the Mid Autumn Festival.

In this picture, it looks like some green beans under the ham. But in our order, we usually get delicious chestnuts on the bottom instead of beans. The chestnuts are so well cooked that they melt in your mouth. Mmm... YumYum. The whole dish is smouthered in honey sauce. I kind of found it too sweet to my taste.

I ordered this once, but I found the pork to fatty for my age. If I were 30 years younger with no weight concern, I probably could finish this whole thing all by myself. The "becon" (kou yok) is pure fat that melts in your mouth. Mmm.... yummy yummy before my arteries clogs up.

I ordered this everytime we go to this restaurant. I don't think you need advanced order for this dish though. The lettuce is very crispy and they also mix some crispy deep-fried bits of something in the filling too. Mmm... Yummy. I wrote a review of this restaurant on yelp.com. The reviewers on yelp seem to love this restaurant, its yelp rating is amongst the highest in Milpitas.

I started to like the green tea also.

By the way, Fantasia has opened a few more stores in the area. The store in Cupertino is a hang-out place and there is always a long line. The store in the upscaled Santana Row is less Chinese, yet it is also very popular. The owner must be making a fortune.

I don't know how to eat it neither. The fermentation produces the slimes. The textual of the slimy beans in the mouth can be described in one word, "gross!" I believe people eat this because they believe the slime is healthly to the body. I am not a fan of this dish. I was brave enough to try it a few times when I was in a Japan tour. I have probably filled my life time quotas on nato.

You identified yourself as an artist. Did you do this bonsai as an art for sale or it was just your hobby? If you were to put a price on this, how much is it worth?

The picture was taken in Nov 2006. The dollars were a little bit stronger back then. Probably because we were dining in tourist areas all the time, the price was quite consistent, about 23 - 25 Euro for lunch, and 30+ for dinner. The food was better in Barcelona than in Madrid, and cheaper too.

This one was not my dish. I believe it was good. The comparison of food quality between Barcelona and Madrid was like heaven to hell. We didn't have a bad meal in Barcelona, but we didn't have a good meal in Madrid. Food were expensive everywhere we went, around 25 Euro for lunch and more for dinner. Food in Madrid were aweful and more expensive too. I guess just because we were tourists and we didn't want to save a few dollars and missed the opportunity to taste great local food. We figured that we spent thousands in air fare and hotel room, staying away from great food because of the price would be just penny wise and dollar fool. So we decided to eat whatever as long as the price was not more than the air fare. If we would visit these two cities again, we would fast in Madrid and spend all the money saved in Barcelona. :-)

One bowl everyday! My wife will envy you very much. I wish I could afford that and she will be a happier wife. :-) For me, Bird nest gives me acid reflux. i.e. stomach acid flowing backward, gives me heart burn and wakes me up in the middle of the night.

Due to my own reaction, I do believe something in the bird nest would affect the digestive system and increase appetite. My kids were premature babies, my wife fed them the bird nest once in awhile whenever they were not eating much. She swore by the benefits and that justified the big hole at the bottom of my wallet.

My kids are no longer babies and also we cut down the purchase after the news about the bird flu. My philosophy is that if there is a health risk, we should not pay so much for it. :-)

I represent my kids and gave this a lick.

Wow! What a collection. Do you have individual pictures of them? It would be interesting to read the description of each type of citrus included here.
